EAQUALS Inspection: June 2016

Malaca Instituto has recently passed its latest EAQUALS re-inspection with even better results than before. Malaca Instituto was the first school outside the group of founding members to become an EAQUALS school member. This was over 20 years ago and when there was no independent, Spanish, quality control system available to language schools in Spain (today there is the IC inspection).

Today there are around 150 IC accredited Schools of Spanish in Spain and of these, 10 are members of EAQUALS. With the support of Governmental bodies such as The British Council, the Instituto Cervantes, the Goethe Institut, the Camoes Institute and world leading educational institutions such as the Cambridge and Trinity examining bodies, EAQUALS has established itself as the pre-eminent European-based association for quality control in language schools. Many IALC members are also members of EAQUALS.

General Inspection report comment:

“ Malaca Instituto was inspected by Eaquals in 2016 and met the high standards required for Eaquals accreditation. The teaching, the course programmes, as well as the course organisation, the learning resources, testing and evaluation were all judged to be of high quality. It was found that the institution takes great care to protect the welfare of its clients and staff, and all publicity materials produced by the institution are accurate and truthful.”

Specific areas of Excellence:

The Inspectors identified points of excellence in the following categories:

·         Management and Administration

Management and Administration meet the requirements of excellence as there is evidence of a strategic approach both at macro level in terms of the ways in which the business is developing in a complex market, and students’ and agents’ requirements are evolving, and also at micro-level in areas such as the reshaping of accommodation to meet the demands of clients. The leadership is strong and stimulating and is supported by the open approach to human resources management. Corporate social responsibility is important to management, as evidenced by the considerable investment made in solar power and the replacement of inefficient boilers. Administrative and other information is exceptionally well presented in the institution, and administrative systems work effectively.

·         Course Design and Supporting Systems

Course design and supporting systems are excellent because of the comprehensive nature of the documentation and the way in which it refers to and embodies the principles – not just the scales and levels – of the CEFR, which impacts on the actual teaching.

·         Assessment and Certification

It is an area of excellence because assessment systems such as placement procedures are comprehensive and efficient, and assessment of progress is fair and valid and carefully monitored, with a reliable feedback system.

·         Academic Resources

It is an area of excellence because the Malaca Instituto materials suit the purposes for which they were created well, and they are appreciated by both students and teachers. The very wide range of additional resources available for use with the textbooks is very varied and very well organised for ease of access. ·         Client Services

It is an area of excellence because the accommodation service is very professionally run, and students are given a wide choice as well as excellent accommodation facilities. Exceptional attention is paid to learners’ safety and welfare to ensure they are safeguarded at all times. The range of activities available outside class time is exceptional and aided by the availability of the swimming pool, cafeteria and the gym onsite.

·         Quality Assurance

Quality assurance meets the requirements of excellence because of particular attention given to the feedback obtained from students. The ongoing commitment of the staff as a whole to the quality standards set down by top management are a point of excellence too. This is demonstrated by the quality plan, which specifies the areas where all departments see improvement as necessary or desirable.

·         Staff Profile and Development

It is an area of excellence because there is a high proportion of staff with a level of competence and experience well above the basic level require; and creativity and initiative are encouraged among staff.

·         Staff Employment Terms

They are excellent because Malaca Instituto is a caring employer and a majority of staff have a very good employment package and enjoy permanent continuous employment and other benefits.

·         Internal Communications

Internal communication is an area of excellence because there is an effective mix of formal and informal communications, and documentation provided to employees and to students is comprehensive.

It is an area of excellence because the information provided to the general public via the website and to students is comprehensive and of high quality. The website is very accessible and user friendly.
